The Joy of Tenacity: Two Inspired Paths to Social Justice

kerryKerry Lee Chlarson
was a commissioned officer in the
United States Marine Corps, serving at Camp LeJeune when he
was involved in a serious automobile accident in which he was
severely burned. He spent the next seven months in the hospital
at the Military Burn Center before being transferred to the Veterans
Hospital in Salt Lake City. The next several years were spent
undergoing many surgeries and years of occupational and physical
therapy. Once he was able, Kerry decided to attend the University
of Utah College Of Law, earning his J.D. in 1991. He has worked
for a small law firm, practiced on his own, and worked as the managing attorney for
the Disability Law Center. Kerry is currently employed as an administrative law judge
for the Utah Labor Commission, handling wage claims.

jmikitaJ. Stephen Mikita
has been a Utah Assistant Attorney
General for 29 years. He represents the three largest State Agencies
in Utah providing services and protections for individuals with
disabilities, as well as vulnerable adults.
Mr. Mikita was the first wheelchair freshman in the history of
Duke University, where he graduated magna cum laude and
the first student in a wheelchair ever to be admitted at Brigham
Young University’s Law School.
Born with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a progressive nerve disorder, that has ravaged his
body for 55 years, Mikita’s indomitable spirit and plainspoken wisdom have touched
millions of Americans. He is a popular motivational speaker throughout the country.

davidReid Trautz – After practicing in a small firm for ten years, Mr. Trautz merged his training in law with his passion for business. He now advises lawyers on the issues of businessm process improvement, technology, legal ethics, financial management, attorney-client communications, and risk management. Mr. Trautz speaks on these issues at legal conferences across North America. He also serves on the ABA Techshow Planning Board and is a member of the ABA General Practice Solo and Small Firm Section Technology Board.


matthewBlair Janis - is the Director of Software and Technology at WealthCounsel, LLC where he provides technology systems and
education to estate planning attorneys. He is also adjunct faculty at BYU Law School where he teaches courses in legal technology, focused on the use of technology in the practice of law. Blair has more than 20 years of programming and system development experience. Prior to joining WealthCounsel, Blair was the Practice Applications Manager at Ballard, Spahr, Andrews & Ingersoll, where he developed and applied practice-specific technology for the firm’s attorneys. Blair received his JD, cum laude, from the J. Rueben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University.

tobyHon. John R. Morris was appointed to the Second District Court in September 2004 by Gov. Olene S. Walker. He serves
Davis, Morgan, and Weber counties. Most recently Judge Morris was a founding partner with Snell & Wilmer L.L.P’s Salt
Lake Office. Judge Morris has extensive experience representing businesses in a wide variety of domestic and foreign technology,
corporate and financial transactions. He has published and has been a frequent presenter on corporate, intellectual property,
technology, e-commerce, and computer law topics. Judge Morris is chair of the online Court Assistance Program Policy Board and a member of the court’s Standing Committee on Technology.

lincolnLincoln Mead is the IT Director for the Utah State Bar where he has developed the Bar’s first website and seen it through several iterations. He has implemented a program to assist members of the Bar in solving technology questions and has helped arrange for technology partnerships for the member benefits program such as online CLE. Mr. Mead also provides practice management service information and seminars for attorneys and paralegals, has created interactive communications tools for Bar sections, and worked with the courts and state offices to help get technology tools, services, and information to members of the Utah State Bar. Along with his duties as the IT director he is currently working on the expansion of online member services, and assisting in the promotion and support of the e.filing account management system for the Utah Courts.
